The Archaeological Museum. April '04.
About 7 Km out of Ubud centre, towards Gianyar is the Archaeological Museum, Gedeng Arca Museum. Its on the way if you're going to Pejeng to see the famous 'Moon'. I was a bit amazed to find artefacts from the stone/bronze age of Bali, from Indian and Chinese traders who pre-dated the Dutch by centuries. A history of Bali that I had never thought much about before.
The most fascinating find for me, after the stone burial sarcophagi, was a plaster cast of the faces cast around the rim of the 'Moon of Pejeng'. There they were, within touching distance if I had wanted, and not way up in the dim recess of the ceremonial tower at the Pejeng Temple. These faces are thought by some historians to be mans earliest representations of the human face. The 'Moon' has been dated to some time around 300 BC and is the largest bronze casting known in south east Asia. How did they do it?
There is a magnificently carved, stone gateway in the carefully manicured gardens of the Museum.
There is more information, pictures and stories about Bali on our Home Page. Just select from the list of contents that you'll find there.
